Welsummer hens lay lovely large dark brown eggs. This breed has a reputation for being good layers with a friendly docile temperament. This breed originated in Welsum, East Netherlands.
The males stand out in a crowd with their gorgeous shiny golden brown/reddish brown with hints of blue feathers. They are handsome birds. The hens are also quite lovely although much plainer than the males.
Welsummers handle cold climates quite well and are considered “good” multi purpose birds, meaning that they provide a good amount of meat should you want a flock of meat birds.
We started with three of these lovely chicks but unfortunately one died only a few days after it arrived home. We also had to cull the rooster and you can read about that here. The hen is the leader of our flock and has lovely temperament. She tends to talk to us and pay attention to what we are doing with interest. She is also our most reliable layer providing eggs through the winter unlike the rest of the free loaders!
Here are some snapshots of our lovely Welsummer chickens as they sprouted from being ittie bittie peepers up to about one year old.

Lovelies, they are
Do you still have Welsummers?
